Giftedness Assessment.

Ages 6-16 years

This assessment is mostly performed in the case of suspected gifted or talented profile.

For example, very strong visual spatial reasoning, verbal comprehension, working memory, problem solving, processing speed or advanced skills in reading, writing or mathematics.  It can provide a profile of Academic and Intellectual strengths and weaknesses across abilities and skills.

The assessment involves the administration of both the Academic Achievement Test (WIAT-III) and the Cognitive Assessment (WISC- V).

What does our typical Giftedness assessment involve?

We use statistical processes to compare your child’s abilities and skills against peers of the same age in the general population. If they are performing at a significantly higher level than their peers in particular areas, then there may be evidence to indicate the presence of giftedness or exceptional talent.

More on the WISC-V?

The WISC-V is a cognitive assessment; meaning that it provides useful information about the test takers intellectual abilities.

It provides global score, essentially summarising overall results across several types of mental abilities (verbal, spatial, memory, problem solving and work efficiency). In popular culture, this is often referred to as someone’s IQ. It is more involved than that, and not always accurate or appropriate for the context; so, your assessing psychologist will discuss this further with you at your feedback appointment.

Further to providing a global score of performance, the results provide useful information regarding the test taker’s ability to engage in verbal tasks, visual spatial tasks, memory tasks, problem solving and working efficiently. A profile of performance across these abilities will be provided.

The WISC-V tends to be used by psychologists to provide schools with useful information regarding intellectual deficit or intellectual giftedness so that accommodations, modifications and supports can be coordinated. It is also used to find the specific intellectual strengths and difficulties that a child may have to see what is going well and what can be worked on to improve their functioning.

More on the WIAT-III

The WIAT-III is an assessment tool used in academic achievement testing to assess a child’s current level of school related skills: reading, writing, comprehending language and maths skills.

This test tends to be used when parents or teachers wish to know the performance profile of a child across school related skills, especially in the case of suspected learning disorder (such as what is commonly referred to as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia). It may also be used to assess whether interventions to improve school skills have been effective, for example, work with tutors, speech therapists, OT and in-school intervention.

Results from the WIAT-III would also indicate whether a child is talented in particular areas of academic skill when compared against same aged peers.

A note on package fees & inclusions

* It’s important to us that we can be transparent with assessment costs upfront. In most cases, everything required for the assessment is covered by components that are included in the package. There may, however, be some cases where particular areas may arise or be highlighted during the assessment process, that were not originally presenting for investigation. The Psychologist may wish to suggest some further testing or assessments to thoroughly cover these additional areas. If this is the case, the recommendations will be made to you, as well as the potential additional fees (if any) and you can decide if you wish to proceed with these additions or not.
